Jimbo Fisher has signed a contract extension with Florida State that will rank him among the top 10 highest paid coaches in the country.

The two sides reached an agreement, which was first reported by the Palm Beach Post, early this month. Warchant.com was the first to report the five-year extension was signed today before the team left Tallahassee for California to continue its preparations for the Jan. 6 BCS championship game in Pasadena against Auburn.

The deal will pay Fisher about $4.1 million a year, plus incentives. Fisher’s base salary of $2.75 million this season was 21st nationally.

Various media outlets have reported that Fisher was among the candidates Texas had targeted to replace Mack Brown.

Fisher, 48, has FSU in the national title game in his fourth season since replacing Bobby Bowden. He is 44-10 and has led the Seminoles to the last two ACC titles while playing in the ACC championship game in three of his four seasons. Fisher’s .815 winning percentage is the highest in ACC history.

Fisher is 7-1 against FSU’s biggest rivals, Miami and Florida.

The top 10 coaches made an average of about $5.0 million this season. Of them, only Alabama’s Nick Saban, whose $5.55 base salary is tops in the nation, and Ohio State’s Urban Meyer, who makes $4.6 million, had their team in the top 10 of the final BCS standings. Michigan’s Brady Hoke made $4.15 million this season, which was eighth highest.

Fisher is in position to earn an additional $675,000 in bonuses this season if the Seminoles win the national championship.
